September is one of my favorite months of the year and it’s all about the beautiful weather. It doesn’t matter where you live, nice weather is most likely arriving. As the air becomes crisp and the leaves start to change, there's no better time to step outside and embrace the beauty of fall.
Autumn is the perfect time to reconnect with nature which is good both for our mental and our physical well-being. One of the most significant benefits of being outdoors in the fall is the effect it has on your mental health. The cooler temperatures and vibrant colors of the season can create a peaceful atmosphere that can soothe your stress and lower your anxiety.
Studies have shown that time in nature can boost mood, reduce feelings of depression, and lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress. The cooler weather makes outdoor activities more enjoyable and less strenuous compared to summer’s heat. Walking or hiking in nature not only strengthens your body but also engages your mind, providing a full-body workout while enjoying the beautiful surroundings. It is my favorite time to work out in the garden.
Did you know that exposure to natural light during the day can help you sleep better? Yes, natural sunlight helps regulate your body’s internal clock, known as the circadian rhythm, which in turn improves your sleep patterns. A walk outdoors in the fall sunlight can help you fall asleep more easily and enjoy a deeper, more restful night’s sleep. This is one of the reasons I make it a priority to get out on the patio every day even if its for a few minutes.
As we head into the busier months of the year, fall provides a moment to slow down and recharge. Being in nature promotes a sense of calm and tranquility that prepares you for the holiday season ahead. And, we all know how stressful the holidays can get.
Getting outdoors in the fall isn’t just about enjoying the beauty of the season—it’s an opportunity to improve your physical health, boost your mental well-being, and connect with yourself and others. So, grab a cozy sweater, breathe in the fresh autumn air, and make time to appreciate the season’s gifts.
If for someone reason you cannot get outdoors, try sitting by a window with the sunshine. It feels so good on your skin.
Seriously, if you are struggling with something that is heavy on your mind, try to go for a good walk. It can change our mood quickly and also give you more clarity.
If for some health reason, you cannot go for a walk, sit by a window with the sunshine. It feels so good on your skin.
Even if it's a walk in a cornfield! Last year, I remember how much I enjoyed being outdoors with the little ones!
You’ll be happier, healthier, and feel more grounded as a result.
Have a beautiful day.
