Our thoughts can shape our experiences. We can absolutely change our experiences by changing our thoughts. Now that we are heading into Christmas, it is a perfect time to learn to do a “check-in” before an event, party, or big party gathering.
What we are thinking has everything to do with what we are going to experience. Simply taking a second to gather your thoughts and monitor them can be a genius for your happiness. If you want to have a great time at a gathering but are feeling uneasy, identify your thoughts and come up with what you want to experience such as a fun time and doing what is possible to support it. That might mean to distance yourself from a negative Nellie or someone who is overly tipsy and take a few deep breaths. It can help to come up with thoughts that support a good time.
I need to share an experience that happened last night. We were taking my nephews to a place called Dinosaur Land for a tour of lights and dinosaurs. When we pulled up, right at opening time, the building was not at all what was expected. My sister and I looked at each other and agreed that it was not at all what was expected. What was expected? We are going to Dinosaur Land. What was our vision? Not sure but we had thoughts of not having a good time. However, I caught myself and said maybe we should try anyway. I encouraged my sister that we might have a great time and we should give it a try. The kids, 3 and 5 year old, had a blast and did not want to leave. They petted baby dinosaurs and rode a roaring dinosaur. They were able to play games. Anyway, it is all in how we are thinking. Our thoughts are not always accurate. We need to remember that our thoughts are not 100% accurate. In fact, they can be completely wrong.
This week, check into what you are thinking when going to an event or gathering, it can make all the difference in the world!
