Meditation is a practice that involves focusing your mind and calming your thoughts. While it might sound complex, meditation is simply about finding a quiet moment to connect with yourself. It’s a way to clear your mind of the clutter and chaos that often fills our daily lives. It is reported than we have over 60,000 thoughts a day. Can you believe. That is a lot and most of these thoughts are not serving us. We tend to over think situations, conversations, and even think mean thoughts about ourselves. Learning to mediate will help quite our brains. Most of us think that to mediate that we have to sit on the floor cross legged in some Yoga pose and make weird noises. But, you can just sit and breathe and focus on being present in the moment.
What Is Meditation?
At its core, meditation is about being present in the moment. It typically involves sitting or lying down in a comfortable position, closing your eyes, and focusing on your breath. As you breathe in and out, you gently guide your attention back to your breath whenever your mind starts to wander. And, it will wander. I promise. This process helps you become more aware of your thoughts and feelings without getting caught up in them. It is not a problem when your mind starts offering you thoughts such as and no you don’t have to “start over”. Just notice the thought and let it float off like a feather.
Meditation doesn’t require any special equipment or training. It’s a simple practice that anyone can start, no matter where they are or how much time they have.
Benefits of Meditation
Reduces Stress: One of the most well-known benefits of meditation is its ability to reduce stress. By calming the mind and focusing on the present, meditation helps to lower cortisol levels, the hormone responsible for stress. Huge reason to start.
Improves Focus: Meditation trains the mind to concentrate better.
Choose what works for you. Does sitting quietly someone and counting each breath work? Or maybe it's laying down on the floor staring at the ceiling. Or maybe, sitting quietly in a chair focusing on a specific object that works for you. I know someone who burns a candle and watches the flame while staying focused on the moment. Try different poses and places and find one that works for you. I do my meditating during my 10 minute yoga routine each morning. I try to focus on my bodies muscles. I still struggle with thoughts popping up!
What ever feels right, try to do a little meditation. Let’s get into a practice to quiet our minds and be more present. Remember it will not be perfect. You will have thoughts pop up like what needs to get done, don't forget the clothes in the dryer, or even a post on facebook that seem to upset you. All kinds of thoughts will pop up. Simply catch and release them into the air and get back to the moment.
Have a beautiful day!
