Unraveling the Essence of Motivation vs. Commitment for Women

Updated: Jan 8, 2024

Embracing a healthier lifestyle is a journey that becomes increasingly significant as we age. Especially if you are over fifty. The secret sauce to success lies in understanding the nuanced difference between motivation and commitment when striving for a healthier, more vibrant life. Personally, this was huge for my transformations.

Motivation: The Spark that Ignites Change

Motivation is the initial spark that propels us toward change. It's that surge of inspiration that makes you want to go take the walk, sign up for a class, or clear your pantry of junk foods. For aging women, motivation often stems from a desire to enhance overall well-being, boost energy levels, or simply look and feel better.  There is nothing wrong with wanting to look better.

Understanding the pure nature of motivation is crucial. It can be fueled by external factors like a new year, a health scare, or an inspiring book or podcast.  It may only be to be able to wear whatever you want.  Or, maybe the clothes that are in your closet!   Motivation sets the stage for change, it can be fleeting and susceptible to life's ups and downs.  In other words, when life happens, motivation runs.

Commitment: The Backbone of Lasting Change

Commitment, on the other hand, is the unwavering dedication to your health goals, even when motivation wanes. It's the backbone that sustains your journey toward a healthier lifestyle. For aging women, commitment often involves recognizing the long-term benefits of health and wellness, such as increased resilience, disease prevention, and enhanced quality of life. What good is living longer if we cannot go anywhere or live on our own?

Building commitment means establishing sustainable habits. It's about incorporating regular exercise, adopting a balanced and nutritious diet, and prioritizing self-care into your daily routine. Unlike motivation, commitment is an internal force that remains steadfast through life's inevitable challenges.

Strategies to Cultivate Motivation and Commitment:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Start small and gradually increase the intensity of your health goals. Realistic goals create a sense of accomplishment, fueling motivation and making it easier to commit.  Remember, one pound a week to lose is fifty-two in a year.

  2. Know Your 'Why': Understand the deeper reasons behind your desire for a healthier lifestyle. Whether it's being present for your family, aging gracefully, or enjoying playing on the floor with grandkids, being connected with your 'why' strengthens commitment.

  3. Create a Support System: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your commitment to health. A supportive spouse, partner, and family can bolster motivation during challenging times and help you stay accountable. If you have someone around you who is not supportive, I would think hard about that and let them know that it is important to you. Then, you make the decision!

  4. Embrace Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and setbacks are inevitable. Rather than derailing your progress, approach setbacks with flexibility. Adaptability is key to maintaining commitment.

  5. Celebrate Milestones: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. Recognizing progress reinforces motivation and instills a sense of pride that solidifies commitment.  Celebrating encourages us to keep going.

Embarking on a journey to a healthier life requires a delicate balance between motivation and commitment. While motivation provides the initial jump start for change, commitment serves as the enduring force that sustains lasting transformation. By understanding and nurturing both aspects, you can navigate the path to wellness with resilience, grace, and a steadfast determination to prioritize your health.  Let’s do this.

Let’s get healthier together!
