The "Think, Feel, Do" cycle is a powerful concept that explains how our thoughts, emotions, and actions are interconnected. This cycle illustrates how our thoughts influence our emotions, which in turn drive our behaviors. Recognizing this cycle can help us make more conscious decisions and break negative patterns. If there is one concept that has blown my mind, this is it. If you just practice calling out your thoughts, you will be surprised at how many we just dream up. It is reported that we have over 60,000 thoughts a day. I am sure in us women that many of them are negative about ourselves.
There are other concepts very similar that go into more depth. In one of my programs, it is explained that that we have have a circumstance, then we have our thoughts about that circumstance, then our reaction to the circumstance, and this is what gives us a result. All of them prove that what we are thinking, cause how we are going to feel, and how we feel will lead us to doing something. That “something” in our action is most likely going to encourage us to look for relief. When we become aware of this-we can just sit with the discomfort. For instance, we all get bored. When we are bored, we go looking for something to do. It would be nice if we always chose something that was productive but it often is quick and easy. It may be scrolling on social or snacking on chips. Another example is that you have an argument with a friend and feel upset. Your brain will want to cheer you up and will give you thoughts of we need to feel better quickly so let’s have ice cream or snickers. Any quick hit of dopamine that will make us quickly get us some relief. The brain’s job is to keep us safe and happy. Fortunately, we can guide it to chose a relief with no negative consequence like a quick walk around the block. But, we know that takes energy and the primitive brain wants to conserve our energy. Here is when we need to step up and tell our primitive brain who is boss.
To break it down again:
Think:
Our thoughts are the starting point of this cycle. They shape our perception of the world around us. Whether it’s a positive or negative thought, it sets the tone for how we feel.
Feel:
The thoughts we have directly impact our emotions. For example, thinking “I can’t handle this” may lead to feelings of anxiety, while thinking “I’m capable of managing this” can create a sense of calm. We get to chose the thought. Remember, we have 100% control of these crazy little stories.
Do:
Our emotions drive our actions. If we’re feeling anxious, we might avoid certain tasks or situations. Conversely, when we feel confident, we’re more likely to take proactive steps.
By understanding and interrupting this cycle at the "Think" stage, we can influence our emotions and actions in a more positive direction. This awareness empowers us to take control of our lives and create better outcomes.
