Have you ever noticed how slipping into a well-fitted outfit makes you feel instantly more put-together? Or how lounging in pajamas all day can leave you feeling unmotivated? That’s not just in your head—there’s actual psychology behind it!
It’s called enclothed cognition, a fancy way of saying that what we wear affects how we think, feel, and even behave.
The Science Behind It
Researchers have found that clothing isn’t just fabric on our bodies—it carries meaning. When we wear something associated with power, confidence, or even intelligence, we tend to embody those traits. In one study, participants who wore white lab coats performed better on attention-based tasks only when they believed the coat belonged to a doctor (rather than a painter). The takeaway? It’s not just about what you wear, but what you believe your clothes represent. I learned this concept years ago and have used it to make me feel better. I am serious! If I am feeling blah, I go to my closet and change clothes, put on earrings, and lipstick and immediately I feel different.
What This Means for You
Style isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling empowered, confident, and vibrant no matter what age you are. In fact, I think the older I get, the more I have fun putting together outfits. I care less now what others think. Let them judge me. I am okay with it. If I want to wear bright red lipstick, I do. Here are a few tricks:
Want to feel more capable? Try a structured blazer or a chic outfit that makes you feel sharp. It gives me a feeling of being more polished.
Need an energy boost? Wear colors that brighten your mood (reds, yellows, or vibrant blues).
Craving comfort but don’t want to feel frumpy? Soft, well-tailored fabrics in flattering cuts can keep you feeling both relaxed and confident.
Dress for the Life You Want
Your wardrobe is a tool, not just a necessity. Choosing clothes that reflect your inner power can be a game-changer for your mindset. Whether it’s a bold lipstick, a statement necklace, or a well-loved pair of jeans that fit just right, use your style to show up as the best version of yourself every day. Wearing those over sized t-shirts with stains is not going to boost your confidence for the day. Yes, even if you work from home. Dress to make you feel good. It doesn't have to be dressy. If you love yoga pants, wear well-fitting yoga pants and a cute T-shirt. I cute t-shirt that fits and does not have stains. You all know what I am talking about.
✨✨✨✨DON’T WAIT!
I don’t want to hear some day when I have money to buy a new wardrobe or when I lose some weight. I hear this all the time. This is a problem. I promise. You can be 50 lbs. Overweight and still look good. And, you don't need new clothes. You do need clothes that make you feel good inside and out. Even if you are running errands, by spending a few extra minutes to put on a decent top is not to impress others but to simply uplift your confidence in your own self-image.

I even put new light fixtures in my closet to make me feel more excited about walking into my closet to get dressed. Okay, maybe I am a little over the top with how I like to use my clothes as a way to express how I feel.
Now, go to your closet and put on your best outfit and see the difference it makes in your attitude. When we look good, we feel good. When we feel good, we treat ourselves good.
So, what’s one outfit that makes you feel unstoppable? Wear it, own it, and let your confidence shine!
Have a beautiful day.
