The Power of Serenity: Why Staying Calm Is Good for Your Body

In today's fast-paced world, finding moments of calm can feel like a luxury. However, cultivating a sense of calmness is not just a nice-to-have; it's essential for your overall health and well-being. Research shows that staying calm can have numerous benefits for your body, mind, and spirit. I tend to carry with me a light feeling of anxiety when I want to get a lot done.  I use it in my favor to keep moving however I know it can get a little out of hand and I will start spinning and then end up doing nothing.  This happens when I have a few deadlines which I have this week.  So, I have been doing extra breathing exercises to help.  We all know that stress is not good on our bodies and as we age we need to take even more precautions!

Here's why staying calm is good for your body:

  1. Reduces Stress: When you're stressed, your body releases cortisol, a hormone that can have harmful effects on your body over time. Chronic stress has been linked to a range of health issues, including heart disease, obesity, and depression. By staying calm, you can help reduce the production of cortisol and lower your overall stress levels.

  1. Improves Heart Health: Stress and anxiety can take a toll on your heart health. Studies have shown that people who practice relaxation techniques such as meditation or deep breathing tend to have lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of heart disease. Staying calm can help keep your heart healthy and strong.

  1. Boosts Immune System: Your immune system is closely linked to your stress levels. When you're stressed, your immune system is weakened, making you more susceptible to illness. By staying calm, you can help strengthen your immune system and ward off infections and diseases.

  1. Enhances Digestion: Stress can wreak havoc on your digestive system, leading to issues such as indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and stomach ulcers. By staying calm, you can help improve your digestion and prevent these issues from arising. As we are aging, we need to do anything to help our digestion.  Thinking of being calm helps when you eat digest your food better.  When sitting down at a meal, inhale and count to 5, hold your breath to count to 5, and exhale counting to 7.

  1. Promotes Better Sleep: A calm mind promotes better sleep. When you're relaxed, it's easier to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the night. Quality sleep is essential for your body to repair and rejuvenate itself, so staying calm can help you get the rest you need.  Yes, sometimes I count sheep.  If I wake up during the night and cannot fall back to sleep, I give myself 15-20 minutes or I get up and have some camomile tea.  It does wonders.

  1. Increases Longevity: Studies have shown that people who practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques tend to live longer, healthier lives. By staying calm and reducing stress, you can increase your chances of living a longer and more fulfilling life.  Okay, there you go!

My gardening helps me be calmer. My Amaryllis are blooming!

In conclusion, staying calm is not just a state of mind; it's a way of life that can have profound effects on your body. By practicing relaxation techniques, managing your stress levels, and taking time for yourself, you can reap the many benefits of a calm and peaceful existence. Your body will thank you for it. Find something that works for you.  And, practice it often.  It will do wonders!

Have a beautiful day.
