"5 Practical Ways to Boost Your Self-Image and Empower Yourself"

Today we are going to take a journey of self-discovery and empowerment! As women over fifty, we often find ourselves navigating a multitude of life changes, different from the previous years, and sometimes having a positive self-image is challenging.  When we learn to embrace our age and our unique experience, it can lead to a profound sense of confidence and fulfillment. In this blog, we will explore simple yet impactful steps to enhance your self-image and embrace your inherent beauty and worth.  I want us all to feel good inside and out.  You know that I feel they are both interconnected.  When we shine on the inside it pours out on the outside and vice-versa!

Here is what we all need to practice!

Practice Self-Compassion:  Begin by cultivating self-compassion, the foundation of a healthy self-image. Acknowledge that perfection is unattainable and embrace yourself with kindness and understanding. Treat yourself as you would your best friend, offering words of encouragement and support during challenging times. Remember, self-compassion allows us to embrace our flaws and imperfections with grace, fostering a sense of inner peace and acceptance.  You have heard me say this numerous times but we say things to ourselves that we would not even say to someone we don’t like.  Give yourself compassion.  Self-love.  It is crucial to have a positive image of yourself.  Instead of beating yourself up when you are disappointed, try being curious and ask yourself questions on how you could improve.  Yes, exactly like you would as a friend.  Be kind.

Celebrate Your Achievements:  Take time to reflect on your accomplishments, both big and small. Celebrate the milestones you've reached throughout your life, whether it's raising a family, pursuing a career, or learning to line dance!  I always start a client’s session by asking what is going well.  We tend to blow over any of our accomplishments, but the first to clap for others. Recognize your resilience and strength in overcoming obstacles and challenges. It could be that you offered an ear to an upset grandchild.  By acknowledging your achievements, you affirm what you are doing well and it will help reinforce a positive self-image rooted in self-confidence and pride.

Nurture Your Mind, Body, and Spirit: Invest in self-care practices that nourish your mind, body, and spirit. Prioritize activities that promote physical well-being, such as regular exercise routines, eating nutritious foods, and adequate rest.  Get your sleep and drink your water.  Engage in activities that bring you joy and fulfillment, whether it is cooking a beautiful meal, practicing yoga, spending time in nature, or indulging in creative pursuits such as knitting or quilting.  I know it sounds woo woo but doing things alone calms our mind and helps us feel good.  I love to curl up and read my book sipping on a hot cup of tea.  I challenge you to add more to your life.  Find things that light you up and calm your mind.

Surround Yourself with Positive Influences:  Surround yourself with people who lift you up and inspire you. Cultivate relationships with friends, family members, and mentors who support your growth and encourage you to pursue your passions and dreams.  Distance yourself from toxic individuals or negative influences that undermine your self-confidence and self-worth. You know the ones who encourage you to become a better you.  The one that wants you to eat well, the one that comforts you when you are upset, but gives you support to find the courage to face obstacles.  Remember, the company we keep significantly impacts our self-image, so choose wisely and prioritize relationships that foster positivity and empowerment.  We become like those we hang out with the most.  Think about that.  We are who we hang out with.  I cannot stress how important this is.

Embrace Your Authenticity Embrace your unique qualities, experiences, and perspectives that make you who you are. Celebrate you!  Your individuality and what makes you.    Try to resist the pressure to conform to what you think are the standards or expectations. Honor your passions, interests, and values, unapologetically expressing yourself with confidence and authenticity. By embracing your true self, you empower others to do the same, creating a ripple effect of authenticity and self-acceptance in your community and beyond.  Be you!  How liberating is that!   Don’t apologize for wanting to go to bed at 8 pm or eat a meatball for breakfast.  Learning to be okay with what is not the norm will first seem uncomfortable but then just say screw it.  Just be you…in fact, that is why I started a coffee chat on Saturday mornings.  I wanted to show up being me.  It feels good.

As women age, we possess a wealth of wisdom, resilience, and beauty that deserves to be celebrated and cherished. By practicing self-compassion, celebrating our achievements, nurturing our well-being, surrounding ourselves with positivity, and embracing our authenticity, we can cultivate a profound sense of self-love and confidence. Remember, your self-image is a reflection of your inner strength and worth, so embrace it with pride and grace. Here's to embracing the beauty of aging and living life to the fullest!
